Title:  Safety Research for Nuclear Waste Disposal at INE

The presentation provide an overview on the present nuclear waste situation in Germany. The role of the research organization Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK) is shown and specific emphasis is given to the R and D topics the Institute for Nuclear Waste Disposal (INE). The R and D activities cover the vitrification of High Level Liquid Waste, the reduction of radiotoxicity (by separation of actinides). The wide spectrum of analytical methods available for these studies is presented. The second part of the talk shows details of our experiences with spent fuel experiments. Such experiments are performed for different conditions such as contact with water, brines, steel, clay, etc as well as under aerobic atmosphere and under hydrogen overpressure under reducing conditions. A proposal for TRISO experiments at INE is discussed.
